Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
Give three uses for mitosis in living organisms
A
- Growth
- Repair
- Reproduction (asexual)
2
Q
Give the names of the four phases in mitosis
A
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
3
Q
Describe what happens in prophase
A
- The chromosomes condense and become visible in the nucleus.
- The nucleolus disappears and the nuclear membrane breaks down
- Centrioles move to the opposite poles of the cell
- Proteins produce spindle fibres which attatch to the centromeres of the chromosomes and begin to move the chromosomes to the equator of the cell
4
Q
Describe what happens in metaphase
A
- The spindle apparatus is completely formed
- The chromosomes are all lined up at the equator of the cell
5
Q
Describe what happens in anaphase
A
- The centormeres holding the sister chromatids togehter splits
- The spindle fibres shorten pulling the sister chormatids apaprt to opposite poles of the cell
- The chromatids form āVā shapes as they are being dragged by the centromere through the liquid cytosol
6
Q
Describe what happens in telophase
A
- The chromatids have now reached the opposite poles of the cell and are now chromosomes
- The spindle apparatus breaks down
- The nuclear membrane reforms around the chromosomes at each pole of the cell
- The chromosomes uncoil into chromatin state
- The nucleolus reappears in each nucleus
- Cytokinesis begins
7
Q
Describe what happens in cytokinesis
A
- The central cell membrane is pulled inwards by the cytoskeleton
- This creates a cleavage furrow which gradually deepens until the cell membranes fuse in the middle to form two individual cells
