mitosis Flashcards
what happens during prophase
- chromosomes condense making them more visible
- the nucleus breaks down making the chromosomes free floating in the cytoplasm
- the centrioles (bundle of proteins) begin to form spindle fibres
what happens during metaphase
the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell and attach to the spindle fibres
what happens during anaphase
the spindle fibres contract and the chromosomes pull apart from their centromeres
this allows the chromatids to move to either end of the cell
what happens during telophase
the chromosomes uncoil and the cytoplasm starts to split, two new nuclei form around the chromosomes
what does mitosis create
2 genetically identical diploid cells - meaning it contains 2 complete sets of chromosomes (one from each parent)
what type of cell undergos mitosis
somatic - all except sex cells
how many chromosomes are in a diploid cell and what can it be represented by
46 - 23 pairs
