Mitosis Flashcards
Why do cells need to divide/reproduce?
Growth
repair
replacement
Prophase
DNA coils tightly and becomes visible
as chromosomes.
metaphase
Spindle begins to form.
The spindle apparatus forms and
attaches to the centromere of
the chromosomes.
anaphase
Sister chromatids separate.
They are pushed and pulled toward opposite poles of the cell by
the spindle fibres.
telophase
Separation of the chromosomes
is completed.
nuclear membrane reforms
Chromosomes begin to uncoil.
What is cytokinesis?
Cytokinesis is the division of
the rest of the cell (cytoplasm and
organelles) after the nucleus
divides (mitosis).
Describe the cells produced through mitosis?
During mitosis, a cell duplicates all of its contents, including its chromosomes, and splits to form two identical daughter cells.
What happens if cells undergo too much or too little mitosis?
If mitosis gets out of control cancer occurs.
