Endocrine system Flashcards
what is the role of the endocrine system?
The endocrine system maintains balance in the body through the
action of hormones.
At least three areas the endocrine system regulates?
Growth and development
Male and female development
How your body uses energy
What is an endocrine gland? what does it secrete?
An endocrine gland is a
gland that secretes
hormones into the
bloodstream for transport
around the body.
What is a hormone? How does it travel in the body?
Chemical messengers are secreted from glands into the blood and affect cells in other parts of the body. Travels through the blood stream
What is a target cell/organ? How does it respond to hormones?
Hormones only work on certain cells called target cells.
The target cells have special receptors that “recognise” the hormones and allow them to influence that cell.
Why is the pituitary gland known as the master gland?
The pituitary gland is sometimes called the “master” gland of the endocrine system because it controls the functions of many endocrine glands
Name an example of an endocrine disorder. What has gone wrong to produce these symptoms?
Type 1 Diabetes
We believe that it is an auto-immune disorder where the body mistakenly destroys insulin producing cells in the pancreas.
