Mitosis Flashcards
Interphase
Isn’t a part of mitosis but essential part of cell cycle.
• replication of organelles with their own DNA
• making of new organelles
• increase in cell size
• synthesis of ATP and proteins
• replication of DNA
What does mitosis do
Produces cells which are genetically identical to parent cell, to give genetic stability
Why does mitosis happen
• growth.
• repairing damages cells
• replace old, worn-out cells
• asexual reproduction
What happens if genes which regulate the cell cycle are damages
Uncontrolled mitosis can occur.
This rapid replication of cells can form tumours, leading to cancer.
What is cytokinesis
The division of cytoplasm to create 2 genetically identical cells
Difference in cytokinesis in plant cells
No centrioles in plant cells.
And a cell plate develops from the centre out, instead of cleavage from outside in like in animal cells
Prophase
• chromosomes condense and become visible.
• centrioles moves to opposite sides of cell (in animal cells)
• spindle forms from microtubules.
• nuclear envelope disintegrates
Metaphase
Centromeres of chromosomes attach to spindle and line up on equator
Anaphase
• spindle fibres shorten.
• centromere separates and individual chromatids pulled to poles, centromere first
Telophase
• spindle breaks down
• chromosomes uncoil
• nuclear envelope reforms
