Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis
a process where cells duplicate the DNA to make new cells to replace old, damaged, or worn out cells (ex- new cells to replace a scab/injury)
Interphase
the longest phase- the DNA is being copied
Prophase
the membrane around the nucleus (nuclear membrane) disappears and and the chromatin becomes coiled and condensed
Metaphase
(middle) the spindle fibers
line the chromosomes up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase
(apart) the chromosomes break at the centromere and the chromatids are pulled apart toward the opposite ends of the cell
Telophase
(two) The final stage of mitosis when the spindle fibers disappear & a nucleus forms around each set (2) of chromosomes
Cytokinesis
when the cytoplasm divides and the newly copied cell separates to form two identical “daughter cells”
Chromosome
found in the nucleus of a cell, it holds the DNA
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic Acid- this is the genetic material that determines the traits of an organism, it is copied during interphase
Centromere
the center that holds the chromatids together
Spindle fibers
Thin string-like fibers that attach to the chromosomes during metaphase to pull the chromosomes apart
Cell Cycle
the process a cell goes through each time it divides
