Blood type A
has “A” antigens
Blood type that has both A and B antigens
AB
Blood type O
-blood type is the “universal donor”
-can give blood to any blood type
Rh factor
-A protein that can be present on the surface of red blood cells.
- if its present the blood will be positive
-if its absent, blood will be negative
antigen
a toxin or other foreign substance which causes an immune response in the body
Blood type AB+
Blood type known as the “universal recipient”–can receive blood from any donor
Type O blood
has no A or B antigens
transfusion
-a procedure that uses donated blood to replace blood lost due to surgery or injury
-donor and recipient must have compatible blood
antibodies
Proteins produced by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects
agglutination
an antigen-antibody response that causes blood cells clump together
