Mitosis Flashcards
What is Mitosis
The process of cell division
what do single celled organisms use mitosis for?
to reproduce
what do multicellular organisms use mitosis for?
to repair damaged tissue and for growth
what is the meaning of diploid?
means the cells have two matching sets of chromosomes
stage 1 of mitosis
chromosomes are long and not visible. DNA is copied exactly by a process called replication.
Stage 2 of Mitosis
Chromosomes shorten and thicken to become visible. Spindle fibres form in the cytoplasm. Nuclear membrane breaks down.
Stage 3 of Mitosis
Spindle fibres line chromosomes up along the equator of the cell
Stage 4 of Mitosis
Spindle fibres pull chromatids apart. Chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles of the cell.
Stage 5 of Mitosis
New nuclear membranes form around the two sets of chromosomes. Cytoplasm splits to form two new cells.
Why is it important to make sure that the diploid chromosome complement is maintained in the new cells
so the new cells contain all the genetic information needed to function correctly.
