Biology Flashcards
gene
part of DNA molecule that carries the code for one protein
Allele
different form of gene. e.g. The gene for hair colour has alleles for brown, black, red and blonde hair.
Phenotype
What the characteristic actually looks like. e.g. brown hair.
Genotype
The alleles that are present, written as letters e.g. BB.
Dominant
An allele that will always be seen in the phenotype if it is present.
Recessive
An allele which will only be seen in phenotype if there is no dominant allele present.
Homozygous
Only one type of allele is present in the genotype. e.g. BB or bb.
Heterozygous
Both dominant and recessive alleles are present in the genotype. e.g. Bb.
P
The parents in a genetic cross.
F1
The first generation of offspring in a genetic cross.
F2
The second generation of offspring in a genetic cross
