mitosis Flashcards
what is mitosis
type of cell division, where one cell splits in half to form two new cells
names of original + new cells
parent cell –> two daughter cells
mitosis function
- adds new cells to body
- replaces old/damaged cells for injuries + general replacement
step 0 of mitosis: before the process begins
parent cell replicates its DNA(process explained in DNA set)
step 1 of mitosis
DNA condenses into chromosomes
step 2 of mitosis
nuclear membrane breaks down, chromosomes align at the equator of the cell
step 3 of mitosis
fibres extend from poles of the cell and pull the chromatids apart, where each pole receives a copy of each chromosome
step 4 of mitosis
cell membrane pinches together at center of cell, creating two daughter cells
last step of mitosis
nuclei form around chromosomes, chromosomes unravel into DNA
genetic info in parent + daughter cells
only one parent cell; genetic information in parent cells + daughter cells are exactly the same
