mitosis Flashcards
what are the 5 stages of mitosis
interphase prophase anaphase metaphase telophase
what happens in prophase
the chromosomes condense, the centrioles start moving to opposite poles of the cell making a spindle, the chromosomes lay free in the cytoplasm after the nuclear envelope breaks down
what happens in metaphase
the chromosomes line up along the centre of the cell and become attached to the spindle by their centromeres
what happens in anaphase
cytokenisis starts, the centromeres divide, seperating the sister chromatids, the spindle starts contracting pulling the chromatids to opposite sides of the spindle centromere first making it appear v shaped
what happens in telophase
chromatids reach the opposite sides of the spindle, they uncoil and become chromosomes again, a nuclear envelope forms around each group of the chromosomes making 2 nuclei, cytokenisis then stops
