Q

what is the first 2 steps of the absorption of lipids

A

fatty acids and monoglycerides are emulsified by the bile salts, forming micelles. the micelles then enter the epithelial cells and link to form triglycerides

Q

define co transport

A

the coupled movement of substances across a cell membrane with the use of carrier proteins. this uses facilitated diffusion aswel as active transport

Q

describe the cotransport of glucose molecules and sodium ions in epithelial cells

A

the sodium ions and glucose molecules are transported to the epithelial cells via facilitated diffusion, however this is only possible if a concentration gradient is maintained, so the sodium ions are actively transported out of the cell. the glucose molecules then exit into the blood via facilitated diffusion.
