Mitochondrion Flashcards
What are the 7 parts of the mitochondrion?
Matrix, crista, ribosomes, outer membrane, fluid filled space, inner membrane, loop of DNA
What does the double membrane do?
Isolates reactions of the Kreb cycle and electron transfer from the general cytoplasm
Why does the double membrane isolate reactions of the Kreb’s cycle and electron transfer from the general cytoplasm?
To maintain high concentrations of enzymes and substrates which increases the rate of respiratory reactions
What is a feature of the outer membrane?
Permeable to small molecules like sugars, salts and nucleotides
Feature of the inner membrane?
Selectively permeable
Why is the inner membrane selectively permeable?
So the mitochondrion can control the chemical composition of the matrix, optimising conditions for enzyme activity
What is the inner membrane spanned by?
Proteins (porins)
What do the proteins on the inner membrane of the mitochondrion allow?
Entry of pyrovic acid and oxygen, exit of ATP and CO2
What is the inner membrane folded in to?
Cristae
Why is the inner membrane folded into cristae?
To increase the SA for attachment of enzymes and co-enzymes involved in the electron transfer chain.
Allows the sequential attachment of electron carriers in the ETC
What does the matrix contain?
70S ribosomes, DNA and enzymes
