Mitochondria Flashcards
How are mitochondria similar to bacteria?
- Have their own DNA
- Have their own protein synthesis system and ribosomes
- Make ATP!
3 stages of ATP production
1) citric acid cycle
2) electron transport chain (respiration)
3) oxidative phosphorylation
citric acid cycle
Starting product is oxolacetate
Produces CO2
NAD+ and FAD reduced to NADH and FADH2
CCCP
uncouples release of protons (favorable) with ATP synthesis (unfavorable) so no ATP is produced
»_space; eliminates proton gradient
oxidative phosphorylation
protons flow into inner membrane which ATP synthase uses to make ATP
why is it called oxidative phosphorylation?
ADP is phosphorylated and pyruvate is oxidized
electron transfer chain
electrons are transferred through a series of pumps that release energy from the high-energy electrons that is used to pump H+ out of the inner membrane
coenzymes
NAD+/NADH and FAD/FADH2 both store chemical energy
