Define NATO advisory service

A

The controlling unit will provide adequate warning of hazards affecting aircraft safety. The aircraft commander is responsible for the aircraft’s navigation and collision avoidance.

Note: The controlling unit may provide the aircraft advisory changes to altitude, speed and heading for positioning or to conduct a controlled approach. However, the aircraft commander remains ultimately responsible for the aircraft’s safety and collision avoidance.

Define NATO positive service

A

The controlling unit is responsible for taking action such as ordering the necessary alterations to heading, speed and altitude, in order to avoid collision and to give warning of other known hazards affecting the aircraft.

Note: Positive Control shall not be provided when operating below 500ft AMSL

Note: RN ship’s radar information is not sufficiently accurate to provide NATO positive service.

Note: Positive Control is not currently applied by RN controllers with the exception of MARUAS iaw BRd 768 CH0120.

Define close control

A

A form of mission control in which the aircraft is continuously controlled for altitude, speed and heading, to a position from which the mission can be accomplished.
The controlling unit will advise the aircraft commander of the current tactical picture and will provide further advice if and when available.

Define Loose control

A

A form of aircraft mission control in which the aircraft commander selects his own speed, altitude, heading and the appropriate tactics required to accomplish the assigned task. The controlling will advise the aircraft of the current tactical picture and will provide further advice if and when available
