In relation to being promoted, be able to summarize the major “Do” and major “Don’t” on pg 280.
Do - deliver sensational performance, far beyond expectations, and at every opportunity expand your job beyond its official boundaries
Don’t - make your boss use political capital in order to champion you
Do - Expand your job’s horizons to include bold and unexpected activities
Don’t - Not living up to your company’s values and behaviors can destroy your reputation, regardless of your performance at your job.
Summarize the four minor “Do’s” and one minor “Don’t” on pg 288.
The Do’s are:
- Manage your relationships with your subordinates with the same carefulness that you manage the one with your boss.
- Get on the radar screen by being an early champion of your company’s major projects or initiatives
- Search out and relish the input of lots of mentors, realizing that mentors don’t always look like mentors
- Have a positive attitude and spread it around
The Don’t is:
- Don’t let setbacks break your stride
Do’s
- Manage down to your subordinates in order to avoid becoming too remote from them and losing their support and affection. Also, don’t get too close to your employees, and end up acting more like a buddy than a boss.
- Volunteer to lead major projects and initiatives, particularly ones that don’t have a whole lot of popularity at the outset
- Mentors are everywhere. The best mentors help you in unplanned, unscripted ways. Relish all that the information they give you.
- Have a sense of humor, be fun to be around with. Likability factor is a huge part of being promoted.
Don’t
- Don’t complain about your setbacks. View each setback as a challenge to overcome.
