Which CSF tubes should be sent to micro, hematology and chem lab?
Tube 1: Chemistry (contains skin plug thats ok)
Tube 2: Micro (most sterile)
Tube 3: Hematology (least amount of blood from traumatic stick)
Direct smear:
- Haemophilus
pleomorphic gram negative rods so small you can’t tell if it is a GNR or cocci
Direct smear:
- Neisseria
Gram Neg Diplococci (small)
Direct smear:
- Listeria
Big enough to tell that it’s a rod
Direct smear:
- E. coli
Medium to large gram variable rods
Direct smear:
- Staph

What condition would likely cause growth of anaerobes in CSF?
Brain abscesses
How CSF should be stored during transportation or if they can’t be immediately processed?
CSF should NOT BE REFRIGERATED. RT or incubation
CSF set up
If you have less 1ml you vortex and resuspend in the supernate; if you have >2 centrifuge for 20 mins.
CHOC, SBA, THIO, and two slides; Not enough fluid? Chocolate and slide
