Miscellaneous Flashcards
Describe development of the zygote
Sperm + egg = Zygote –> morula (ball of cells) –> blastula (hollow ball of cells) –> gastrulate (primitive trench forms, that’s where the germ layers show up)
totipotent stem cells vs pluripotent stem cells
toti- can become anything, found in gastrula
pluri- can become many things, found in brain
Define pseudocoel
body cavity not lined with a membrane
What is the most abundant phylum?(greatest number of individuals)
Nematodes (round worms) 80% of all living individuals, 1 million in a shovel full of dirt
Diseases caused by parasitic nematodes
Elephantiasis, trichinosis (eye fever), pinworms (intestinal disorder, fever, vomiting)
protostome vs deuterostome
proto- blastopore becomes the mouth
deutero- blastopore becomes the anus
Blastopore is the first opening in morula development
What phylum is the largest animal found?
phylum mollusca (giant squid)
definition of pelagic
living in open water, not at the surface or bottom. ex nautilus
Phylum annelida specialized organs
Repeated segments contain:
Chaetae- spikes that hold worms in their holes
nephridium- excretory
Anterior segmants have specialized sensory organs
clitellum- male and female sex organs and mucous created
seminal recepticals higher than clitellum
Which class in phylum Annelida is non-segmented?
hirudinea
Which phylum has the most species?
Arthropoda (over 1 million)
Define pedipalps
feet close to mouth that help with eating found in subphylum chelicerata (spiders and scorpions)
Chelicerae meaning
pincers
What animals are found in class Maxillopoda?
barnacles
What is the most diverse group of animals?
Class insecta
