Miscellaneous Flashcards
What does the Conservation of Mass state?
The Conservation of Mass states that the mass of the reactants must always equal the mass of the products.
What is combustion?
Combustion is burning - a fuel reacts with oxygen to release water and carbon dioxide.
What is the word equation for complete combstion?
hydrocarbon (fuel) + oxygen ==> water + carbon dioxide
What is the word equation for incomplete combustion?
hydrocarbon (fuel) + oxygen ==> water + carbon monoxide + carbon
How can you light a bunsen burner safely?
When lighting it, light it on the safety flame with the air hole fully closed. When heating something, use the heating flame with air hole fully open.
What is a control variable?
A control variable is a variable that must be kept the same throughout the experiment.
What is an independent variable?
An independent variable is the variable that you change.
What is a dependent variable?
A dependent variable is the variable that is influenced by the independent and control variables.
What are the symbols for these elements:
Hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, magnesium, sodium, chlorine, calcium, copper, iron, helium
H - Hydrogen
C - Carbon
N - Nitrogen
O - Oxygen
S - Sulfur
Mg - Magnesium
Na - Sodium
Cl - Chlorine
Ca - Calcium
Cu - Copper
Fe - Iron
He - Helium
What is thermal decomposition?
Thermal decomposition is when a substance breaks down into at least two other substances when heated.
Is thermal decomposition a chemical change even though the substance isn’t reacting with anything?
The substance isn’t actually reacting with anything but it is a chemical change.
What is an example of thermal decomposition using copper (II) carbonate?
copper (II) carbonate ==> copper (II) oxide + carbon dioxide
What is the chemical equation for thermal decomposition using copper (II) carbonate?
CuCO3 ==> CuO + CO2
