Q

What is the temperature method of fertility awareness?

A
  • Take temperature daily before getting up and following at least 3 hours of rest
  • The post-ovulatory infertile phase can be detected by measuring a rise of 0.2 degrees on three consective days when compared to the previous six days
  • No additional method of contraception is needed once the post-ovulatory infertile phase has been identified until the start of menstruation
  • Will need to use barrier methods for 16 days each month in the pre-ovulatory phase

Q

What is the calendar method of fertility awareness?

A
  • Calculate the first fertile day by subtracting 20 days from the shortest cycle.
  • Calculate the last fertile day by subtracting 10 days from the longest cycle.
  • The fertile phase should be constantly adjusted using data from the last 12 months.
  • Need to use barrier contraception during the fertile period.

Q

What is the method of monitoring cervical secretions and cervix for fertility awareness?

A
  • During the ovulatory phase of the cycle, women produce more oestradiol from the developing ovarian follicle which results in cervical secretions becoming abundant, stretchy and similar to raw egg white mid-cycle
  • Need to record when they first notice any secretion and this is the start of the fertile phase.
  • Need to abstain or use condoms during this time.
  • Once secretions have reached their peak day, the secretions then become thicker and less abundant under the influence of progesterone. When this change has been present for a full 3 days the fertile phase ends and no additional method is required.
  • Changes to the cervix may also indicate the fertile phase - cervix feels high, soft and open

Q

What is the two day fertility awareness method?

A
  • Assess secretions in the late afternoon or evening
  • Abstinence or use of barriers required when secretions are seen on the day of observation or the day before
  • Once there have been two consecutive dry days no additional methods are required
