Miscellaneous Flashcards
What’s the best way to add one to a fraction?
Keep the denominator the same then add the denominator to the numerator.
What is the distance formula?
Between 2 coordinates
(x1,y1) (x2,y2)
Distance is:
Square root of (x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2
What number do you get if you square a square root or a surd?
The number under the ‘root’ sign.
How many different ways of factorising are there and what are they?
3:
•Highest common factor
•Trinomial
•Difference of two squares
Why do we factorise?
We factorise do that we can solve equations which =0
What are the rules for multiplying/dividing/raising a power to a power in indices?
(1) When multiplying a^m x a^n = a^m+n
(2) Dividing a^m/a^n = a^m-n
(3) Raising (a^m)^n = a^mn
What are negative powers?
Negative powers are reciprocals
(i.e. x^-2 = 1/x^2)
Express a fractional power in written maths.
(i.e. x^p/r)
r(square root)x^p
What is any number to the power 1
Itself.
What is any number to the power 0
1
What’s the best way to subtract one from a fraction?
Keep the denominators the same then subtract the denominator from the numerator.
What are the three most likely domain restriction of functions at higher level?
•Divide by 0
•Squares (always +ve)
Square roots (not for -ve)
•cos/sin range -1<1
