Miscellaneous Flashcards
Describe how to perform Handpiece safety checks
6 mins
Inspection
- Ensure back cap cannot rotate (grip and turn anticlockwise)
- Pull the bur to ensure fully engaged (insert bur, secure, pull)
Safe to use
1. Fit handpiece to coupling and apply tension to ensure secure
Fit for use
- Check bur spins freely (rotation - spin/roll along fingers)
- Check lateral movement (push side-to-side ensuring no excessive movement
- Check sound produced is consistent (run for 5-10s - listen for normal sound)
Describe the differences between types of sterilisers and their tests
6 mins
Type N - non-vacuum, passive air removal. For unwrapped solid instruments
Type B - vacuum, active air removal. For packaged/wrapped instruments including hollow, lumped and porous.
Cycles - air removal, sterilising, drying, cooling
Tests
Daily - steam penetration. Chemical test strip (type N), Helix/Bowie Dick (type B). Wipe clean, change water and perform ACT daily.
Weekly - cleaning efficacy. Protein test strip (type N), vacuum leak and air detector function test (type B).
Quarterly/annually - engineer (validation tests)
Parameters - 134-137C, 2-2.3 bar, min 3 mins.
Sterilised - visible clean, package colour change (brown to blue), Helix/Bowie Dick colour change (yellow to blue). In unsure, re-process starting from WD/manual cleaning
Discuss LA doses, side effects, how to ensure anaesthesia and assembly
6 mins
2% lido ± 80k adr - 4.4mg/kg
4% art ± 1:100k adr - 7mg/kg
3% pril ± 0.54mcg fell - 8mg/kg
Assembly - check BN and EXP. Gold/silver ring towards needle end. Twist in, unsheathe, resheathe one click
Check - ask, probe gingiva, tap tooth. Should feel numb/pins and needles/swollen
Side effects - allergy/anaphylaxis, seizure, cardiac arrest, nausea, vomiting, dizzy, headache, blurred vision, twitchy muscles, nerve damage, prolonged numb/weak/tingling (temp/permanent), haematoma, increased HR
