Misc. Terminology Flashcards
Cytokines
Proteins that will alter the response of the immune system
Interferons
Antiviral activity, tumoricidal effects. Stimulate macrophages, T cells, B cells, and NK cells.
Alpha and B interferons
- Type 1
- Synthesized by macrophages, fibroblasts, and other cell types (T cells?)
Gamma interferon
- Produced by T cells that are stimulated.
- Stimulates macrophages
- Leads to differentiation of T cells and B cells
IL-1
- Made primarily by macrophages
- Stimulates T, B liver, bone, synovial, brain, and muscle cells
IL-2
- Produced by T cells
- T cell growth factor (formerly known as)
- Stimulates B cells and macrophages
IL-3
- Colony stimulating factor (CSF)
- Production of many different types of cells
IL-4
- B cell growth factor
- Important in T-cell stimulation of B-lymphocytes
- T cell growth factor
- Regulator of T cell function
IL-5
- B cell growth factor and differentiation factor
- Eosinophil growth factor
IL-6
-Principal mediator of the acute phase response of inflammation
IL-10
-Stimulates induction of TH-2 cytokines and may suppress TH1 cytokines
IL-12
-Stimulates TH1 response
IL-17
-Involved in inflammation
CSF-1
-Macrophage colony formation
GM-CSF
-Granulocyte and macrophage colonies
