Misc. drugs Flashcards
Tamsulosin indication
Expulsion of kidney stones
BPH
Tamsulosin mechanism of action
Ureteric wall contains α1 adrenergic receptors that mediate smooth muscle contraction. α-blockers relax ureteric wall
What is the treatment for Onychomycosis?
Needs to be treated with oral antifungal agents – eg oral terbinafine for 3-6 months
What two classes of drugs are used for chemical restraint in the case of acute agitation?
Benzodiazepines and neuroleptics
To which class of drugs does Amlodipine belong?
Calcium channel blockers
What are the two classes of Calcium channel blockers?
Dihydropyridines and non-dihydropyridines
What is the action of the dihydropyridines?
Act mainly on arteriolar smooth muscle. Reduce cardiac contractility, heart rate and conduction.
What is the difference between Diltiazem and verapamil?
Diltiazem has a greater effect on arteriolar smooth muscle than verapamil. Verapamil has a greater effect on cardiac contractility, heart rate and conduction.
What is the mode of action of the dihydropyridines?
Act on arteriolar smooth muscle to reduce peripheral vascular resistance and BP. Minimal effect on myocardial cells.
To which class of drugs does Tacrolimus belong?
Calcineurin inhibitors
What are the indications for the calcineurin inhibitors?
Prevention and treatment of transplant rejection
Induction or maintenance of remission in immune and inflammatory diseases
