Aspirin (ASA, Acetylsalicylic Acid)
Class and Action
Class:
Antiplatelet/Salicylate
ACTION:
- Interrupts Thromboxone A2 (TA2) (Decreases platelet aggregation)
- Inhibits prostaglandins (Lipid compounds that stimulate clotting)
- ONSET = 15-30 min, DURATION = 4-6 hrs
Aspirin Indications (dose)
CP with suspected cardiac origin
Adult only:
162-324 mp PO chew and swallow
2-4 81mg pills

Special Information
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
- Unable to swallow
- Active bleeding ulcer / GI bleed
- ASA allergy
SIDE EFFECTS:
- Stomach irritation (nausea/vomiting, epigastric pain, heartburn, indigestion)
- Bronchospasms in some patients with asthma
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
- Pills need to be chewed and swallowed with small amount of water
- Aspirin has no effect on existing blood clots
- Can give if pt is on anticoagulants (Warfarin/Coumadin, Clopidogrel/Plavix, Eliquis/Apixaban)

ACTION:
- Cardioprotective agent in hyperkalemia
Calcium Gluconate
Indications
Dose
INDICATIONS
- Adult pulseless arrest associated with any of the following clinical conditions:
- known hyperkalemia
- renal failure with or without hemodialysis history
- calcium channel blocker
DOSAGE ADULT:
1 g slow IV push
Protocol: 3g SIVP
Indication:
Adult or pediatric calcium channel blocker overdose with hypotension, bradycardia
Dose: ADULT:
3 g slow IV/IO push over 2-3 minutes. Dose may be repeated every 10 minutes for total of 3 doses
Pedi: 60mg/kg, max 1g SIVP, 3 dose total

Special Information
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
- Known hypercalcemia
- Suspected digoxin toxicity
SIDE EFFECTS:
- Extravasation may cause tissue necrosis
- In setting of digoxin toxicity, may worsen cardiovascular function
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
- 10% calcium gluconate solution contains 1 g calcium gluconate per 10 mL, which is only 90 mg of elemental calcium
- Separate line from IV Sodium Bicarb - forms calcium carbonate crystals
