Misc Flashcards
Alkaline Phosphatase
Blood test used to detect liver or bone disorders
Cushings Triad
Cushing’s triad may indicate impending brain stem herniation. Cushing’s triad includes increased blood pressure, decreased heart rate, and irregular/abnormal breathing patterns.
Cytokines
Chemical messages made of protein and sent between cells. They affect the behavior of other LOCAL cells.
Bands/Stabs
Immature neutrophils. (As opposed to mature neutrophils called Segs/PMNs.)
Released when there’s not enough mature ones, usually from bacterial infection.
Eosinophils
Stimulate and modulate the inflammation of allergic reactions.
Also important for destruction of parasites
Basophils
Seen in hypersensitivity reactions, allergic reactions and transplant reactions
Mast cells
A cell filled with basophil granules, Release histamine and prostaglandins in allergic and inflammatory responses
Monocytes-> Macrophages
Stimulate non-specific immune response, identify non-self antigens so lymphocytes can recognize foreign antigens.
Phagocytize
T-cells
Type of leukocyte. Defends against fungal and viral infections.
Important in maintaining self tolerance (prevention of autoimmune disease)
B-cells
Type of leukocyte. Produce antibodies and defend against bacterial infections
Left shift
Means there are a high number of immature white cells present, usually indicates a bacterial infection
Neutrophils
The body’s first defense against bacteria
Adrenergic
Of or like epinephrine (adrenaline) in effect
Activated by epinephrine or like substance
