TAF:
Valid for 6 hours: issued every 3 hours;
Valid for 12 hours: issued every 6 hours
(Validity Period must be 6-30 hours inclusive)

TREND Forecast at METAR (BECMG/TEMPO/NOSIG): When NO time is specified, 2 hour Validity
*SPECI is not necessary if METAR are issued at half-hour intervals. Otherwise it is issued when there is a specified operationally significant changes in the meteorological conditions, special observations and reports between routine observations.

Upper Wind and Upper Temperature Chart: 1.5 hours before and after Validity Time

SIGWX Forecast Chart: 3 hours before and after Validity Time

*VOLMET = Meteorological Information for Aircraft in Flight

Q

Alternate Considerations

A

When HK Terminal area has bad weather, VMMC, ZGSZ and ZGGG are likely to be affected as well. Consideration should be given to bring fuel with RCKH, RCTP, ZJSY, ZJHK, RPLL.

Calculate Landing Fuel, plan with the above options available. Operationally should choose alternate from MOST fuel to LEAST fuel, to escape from weather.

Calculate Landing Fuel by either:
Total Fuel - Taxi Fuel - Trip Fuel - Contingency Fuel, or
Alternate Fuel + Reserve Fuel + Recommended Extra Fuel + Mandatory Fuel (If applicable)

Holding Fuel:300 kg/hold; Full Go Around: 800 kg (A320), 1000 kg (A321)

In-flight draw a list with all alternates with fuel required, cross out one by one, when each option is gone.

Disadvantages of choosing close Alternates:
VMMC: In case of RWY 16 in use AND Bad Weather, better to consider other options. (Even tho Good Weather RWY 16 is not an easy approach.)
ZGSZ: In case of Weather Diversion, route NOT via BEKOL, EXPECT via LANDA, UJ, NLG from the SOUTH instead (RWY 16: LAN1X, RWY34: LAN1Z), resulting as more fuel required than CFP Alternate Fuel.
ZSAM: Once before KA Flight intended to divert there but got refused near DOTMI, resulting as declaration of Fuel Emergency
RCMQ: Military Airfield, less consideration given

Q

Reasons for bringing Extra Fuel and Ball Park Figures (On top of Total Fuel)

A

CFP Minimum Recommended Extra (On an Absolutely Good Day, Can be treated as Diversion Contingency in case when needed):
A320: 400kg
A321: 600kg

Long Taxi / Ground Hold on top of 10 min:
A320: 300kg/20min
A321: 400kg/20min

En-route Weather:
A320: 400kg/10min,
A321: 500kg/10min
Normally could be covered by CFP Contingency Fuel

Far Runway:
A320: 200kg/5min, 400kg/10min
A321: 300kg/5min, 500kg/10min

Standard HK Delay:
A320: 600kg/15min Planned Hold or 1 Short GA
A321: 800kg/15min Planned Hold or 1 Short GA
Close to Fuel Required - Contingency + 30 min
1 Standard 10nm Hold (e.g. ABBEY):
A320: 300kg/8min
A321: 400kg/8min
1 Standard 4min Hold
A320/1: 200kg/4min

Slight Weather or Gusty Wind at Destination (e.g. 180/20 at 25R):
A320: 800kg/20min or Full GA
A321: 1000kg/20min or Full GA

Severe Weather at Destionation:
A320: 1200kg/30min Hold + Another Alternate
A321: 1500kg/30min Hold + Another Alternate
Normally CFP will have already provided Far Alternate + 1 Hour Rec Extra

Lower Level: As per CFP or Estimation from first sector

Increased ZFW (+CORR LNDG x Extra Weight)

If Standard Contingency is not used en-route, it becomes Diversion Contingency which cater for Lower Level, Further Hold at Alternate or ATC Vectors during Diversion

Final Fuel Figure = CFP Fuel Required /FR/ + Extra determined from above - CFP Contingency

Compare Extra Fuel above /FR/ with CFP Rec Extra and History Values

Transfer Extra Fuel into other Options:
Other Alternate + Extra Fuel, Where Extra Fuel can be converted into No. of Holds or No. of GAs
