Definition of aircraft accident

A

830.2

Occurrence associated with operation of aircraft from time any person boards with intent to fly and all have disembarked in which any person suffers death or serious injury or aircraft receives substantial damage.

Serious Injury

  • Hospitalization for >48hr beginning within 7 days from date of injury
  • Fracture of any bone (except simple fractures of fingers, toes, nose)
  • Severe hemorrhage, nerve, muscle, or tendon damage
  • Internal organ injury
  • Second or Third degree burns or any burns affecting >5% of body

Substantial Damage

  • Damage or failure that adversely affects the structural strength, performance, or flight characteristics of the aircraft

(prop strike is not substantial damage)
