Misc Flashcards
THE FREDA CHECK.
Performed periodically throughout your flight & prior to approach to land.
Fuel - contents sufficient and correct tank selected.
Radio -correct frequency selected, and next frequency pre-selected, if appropriate
Engine -temperatures and pressures within limits. Mixture correctly set. Carburettor heat, as appropriate.
DI - synchronised with compass.
Altimeter -correct altimeter sub-scale setting selected.
Thanks Very Much Dear Chap
Having measured True heading (that is the true bearing of your desired track), magnetic Variation is applied to obtain the Magnetic heading; finally compass Deviation is applied to the magnetic heading to arrive at the Compass heading.
Cadbury’s Dairy Milk, Very Tasty
If you are required to relate compass heading to true heading, starting with the compass heading, then work the other way round: compass heading corrected for compass deviation gives magnetic heading which, when corrected for magnetic variation, gives true heading
E6-B Whizwheel rules
- How fast goes first
- Miles are always on the outer scale
- Minutes are on the inner scale
- Does it makes sense?

Airplane speeds
Vs - stalling speed
Vso- stalling speed in landing configuration (full flaps, landing gear down)
Vx - best angle climb (avoid trees)
Vy - best rate climb (faster climb, best altitude)
Vclimb - enroute climb speed
Vfe - maximum flaps extension speed
Va - maximum manoeuvring speed without damaging the airframe.
Vno - maximum structure speed. Fly below this speed if the winds conditions are gusty enough
Vne - never exceed. So much air resistance the wings are being pushed back
Vglide - best glide speed
Vx Vy changes with altitude Vx+ Vy-
Va changes with weight inversely
Know your Hypoxias!
Hypoxic - Oxygen deficiency due to altitude
Anaemic - abundance of CO2 in body
Stagnant - loss of blood to brain
Histoxic - chemical/alcohol poisoning
HASEL CHECK
- Height. Are you high enough for manoeuvre?
- Area. You’re not over built up areas
- Secure. Safety. Are cabin items stowed
- Engine. Blip the Carb heat to test. Review gauges.
- Look Out. Scan for traffic.
Flight Charcterisitics & Centre Of Gravity
Forward CG Summary:
More stable (longitudinal stability)
More fuel consumption (more drag)
More higher stall speed (higher Angle of Attack)
More better stall recovery characteristics
Aft CG Summary:
Less stable (longitudinal stability)
Less fuel consumption (less drag)
Less stall speed
Less stall recovery characteristics
Tower gives altimeter reading
Adjust your altimeter immediately!
