Misc. Flashcards
Bravery
For a brief period, stand alone in the woods at night without a light.
Trust
Fall backwards with your arms out and let someone catch you.
Critters in Shoes and Clothing
Before you put your shoes on in the morning, shake them out in case critters have crawled in there for warmth in the night.
Do the same with your clothing.
Sense of Smell
Try to use your sense of smell as well. It’s a good sense—trust it.
Yellow Jackets
Keep an eye out for yellow jackets that live under ground. If you find a nest stay far away. Don’t try to kill them.
Clay
If you find clay, it is an excellent material. Use it to make bowls, cups, plates and other tools.
Try putting it on your skin to keep insects away.
A thin layer of clay can keep your skin from being sunburned.
Human-Made Objects
You might want to hang onto any little bits of trash you find—it might come in handy.
Solar Power
Charge your solar-powered devices before you need them.
Making Charcoal
Put soft, wooden materials into a metal tin, close it up (you might have to use a metal wire) and place it in the fire. When it’s done smoking take it out without burning yourself. Let it cool down. If the fire was hot enough and the tin was allowed to sit long enough you should have charcoal inside, which has many uses.
Uses:
Charcloth ignites easily
Charcoal burns hotter than normal wood and without smoke
Settles an upset stomach if you eat a little bit
Blacken under your eyes to help you see by reducing glare
Write with it
Grind it up and add to melted resin to create “pitch” (a type of glue)
Widow-Maker
A big thing out in the wild that can squish you.
Examples: Boulders, dead tree, dead branches.
Keep an eye out for what is above you, especially when it’s windy.
Go over downed trees, not under them.
What’s the most dangerous thing out here?
The hatchet!
What’s the most common cause of death in the wild?
Falling
Lightning
Try to keep low—get to lower ground.
Avoid single, tall trees.
Avoid open spaces where you are the tallest thing.
If you have a suspicion that lightning may strike take it seriously.
Storms
Avoid things that can fall on you—that even means healthy, living trees.
Avoid really low areas that could flood.
