MIS Test 3 (Chapter 11) Flashcards
What are the four steps to building an information system?
- Define and understand the problem
- Develop alternative solutions
- Choose the best solution
- Implement the solution
What are information requirements?
The information requirements of a new system identify who needs what information, where, when, and how.
What are system designs?
- Details how a system will meet the information requirements as determined by the systems analysis
- It is the model or blueprint for an information system solution and consists of all the specifications that will deliver the functions identified during systems analysis
- The specifications should address all of the technical, organization, and people components of the system solution
What is completing implementation?
- Hardware selection and acquisition
- Software development and programming
- Testing
- Training and documentation
- Conversion (parallel, direct, and phased)
- Production and maintenance
What is the traditional systems development lifecycle?
- Oldest method for building information systems
- Phased approach with formal stages
- Waterfall approach
- Formal division of labor
- Used for building large, complex systems
- Time consuming and expensive to use
What is prototyping?
- Preliminary model built rapidly and inexpensively
- Four-step process
- —–Identify the user’s basic requirements
- —–Develop an initial prototype
- —–Use the prototype
- —–Revise and enhance the prototype
- Especially useful in designing a user interface
What is outsourcing?
- Can subscribe to an application service provider (ASPs) and use their software/hardware
- Hire an external vendor to design and create software that operates on the organization’s computers
What is rapid application development (RAD)?
Creating workable systems in a very short period of time by using tools for building the GUI, tools that automatically generate program code, prototyping, and/or prebuilt components.
What is joint application design (JAD)?
which brings end users and information systems specialists together in an interactive session to generate IS requirements and develop initial systems design
What is a project?
Planned series of related activities for achieving a specific business objective
What is project management?
Application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to achieve targets within specified budget and time constraints
What is an information systems plan?
Shows how specific information systems fit into a company’s overall business plan and business strategy
What is a portfolio analysis?
- Inventories all of the firm’s information systems projects and assets
- Helps firms evaluate alternative systems projects
What is a gnatt chart?
Visually represents the timing, duration, and human resource requirements of project tasks, with each task represented as a horizontal bar whose length is proportional to the time required to complete it.
What is a pert chart?
Graphically depicts project tasks and their interrelationships, showing the specific activities that must be completed before others can start
