Miracles Flashcards
Miracles essay paragraph 1
Miracles can be described as events beyond understanding or which reason cannot explain. David Humes definition of miracles is a transgression of laws of nature by a particular volition of the deity. The breaking of laws of nature is said by many to be irrational and an impossibility. To many of a religious faith this just proves that god is almighty and is able to break in and save people in our world just as described in religious writings.
Miracle essay paragraph 2 part 1- David Hume- laws of physics intro
David humes definition of a miracle as something which is a violation of the laws of nature. This means unnatural events which go against the accepted laws of physics. The laws of physics are statements based on experimental observation and describe some aspects of the world. The laws of physics seem to work without any alteration and so they are regular and predictable.
Paragraph 2 part 2 laws of physics
Therefore it would seem impossible to think these laws can be changed in certain circumstances. When someone claims to have witnessed a miracles it’s safer to assume they are wrong as it goes against our experiences rather to think that the laws of physics have been temporary changed
Paragraph 2 part 3 religious view
An religious view on this would be to argue humes view as for them god is all powerful and has the ability to changes the laws of physics. However from a scientific view these claims need evidence. The view of miracles is important as they believe god to be all powerful and all loving. The implications of this view is that is someone was to pray for a miracle for example to heal a love one and this does not happen it can impact their faith as they will believe god to not love them or question his existence
Paragraph 3.. scientific method
The scientific method disproves miracles as through science we base our understanding on research and evidence. The scientific method involves these stages obersvation, hypothesis, experiment and verification. This view rejects miracles as they would go through these stages by producing a hypothesis about a miracle and then gather all the evidence if possible. A miracle must be proven to be true and to be shown to be false if not then it is impossible to be proven scientifically.
Paragraph 3 part 2
Miracles are individual experiences and it’s impossible to get inside someone’s head. However people of faith don’t need evidence to prove miracles as they have faith and the bible.
Paragraph 4.. scriptures
For many religious people scriptures are the direct word of god. Therefore they will believe scriptures word for word. Literal christians believe miracles actually happened as written in the bible for example like chapter 8 22-25 Jesus calming the storm
Paragraph 4 part 2
Literal christians will believe there was an actual storm as that is what it says in the bible. Jesus actually spoke to the storm and told it to be still and it did. This is important to Christians as they believe and follow the bible word for word. This impacts them as there are significant amount of christians who believe they literal can do miracles as well as they believe god has given christians an instructions to do what Jesus did when he was on earth for example healing the sick.
Paragraph 4 part 3
This impacts literal christians today as they hold church services where they pray for the sick or they will pray for people on the street of shops. They post some of these hearings on social media to show others what they believe. The implications of this believe is that if the person can not perform the miracle it can impact their faith and others around them as we do not hear of miracles that happened in the spiractures happen today.
Paragraph 4 part 4
Other christians take spircute miracles metaphorical. This means there is a meaning behind the words. They have not to be taken literally. These christians are called liberal Christians. They do not believe miracles happen as they believe miracle stories in the bible to be exaggerated and non scientific. They are written in a primitive culture.
Paragraph 4 part 5
The meaning behind the words needs to be internet us for example the burning bush. There was no burning bush and no god voice. The meaning behind this is all the injustice and unfairness in the world can be inspired to take action and help people to freedom.
Paragraph 4 part 6
This belief is important to Christians today as it helps some understand and cope that these miracles that happen in spicutures don’t happen today however the implications of this belief is that taking one aspect of your faith as a metaphor does that mean that all aspects are a metaphor including god? If you don’t accept miracles as literally true why should you accept any other part of your religion. This shows the benefits of literal christians view as accepting some of your religion and not others can be confusing.
Paragraph 5 part 1 non scriptural
Many religious people are keen to point out that miracles are not just restricted to the stores in their holy book many claim that miracles happen today and these miracles show the power of god.
Paragraph 5 part 2
This is important to literal christians as it shows the power of god and his love however a liberal Christian will not believe these miracles as it goes against the laws of physics. Literal christians believe these miracles as it would be odd to accept that miracles happen in the bible and not today.
Paragraph 5 part 3
One implication of miracles happening today is why heal one person and not others or perhaps we should ask why these people become ill in the first place If god is suppose to be all loving? Another implication of this view is if some miracles can be explained why not others?
