•For airports with 2 usable navaids to different suitable runways, add 200 ft to the higher DA/MDA and 1/2SM to the higher visibility.

When do we need a 2nd alternate?

A

When any part of the METAR or TAF at the destination indicate conditions less than normally authorized (i.e. when using 3585).

Exemption 3585

A
  • FOM 6-11
  • Allows dispatch when only conditional weather (PROB, TEMPO) indicates conditions lower than minimums.
  • 2nd Alternate required when ANY part of the METAR or TAF at the destination indicate conditions less than normally authorized.
  • Requirements for Destination, 1st Alt, & 2nd Alt do not need to consider conditional wording:
    • Destination must not have Visibility less than 1/2 lowest min.
    • 1st Alternate must not have Visibility or Ceiling less than 1/2 the OpSpec values.
    • 2nd Alternate must have Vis & Ceiling at or above OpSpec values.
  • Fuel to destination, furthest alternate and land, plus 45 minutes cruise.
