Minorities - Native Americans Flashcards
Problems
Voluntary relocation programme.
Tribal home lands.
Self-determination.
Problem with voluntary relocation programme:
Federal scheme 1952 to encourage assimilation. 1956 Indian relocation act encouraged 18-35 year olds to move for work. But BIA found 25-33% had returned - led to tribes dislocations.
Problems with tribal homelands:
Government made treaties giving tribes land and money for removal. 1960s treaties were seen as unfair, Natives wanted homelands back.
Problems with self-determination:
Tribes were under BIA’s control. Wanted to break Indian culture.
