Minor Extrusive Activity Flashcards
What is a minor extrusive landform?
A smaller and less extreme form of vulcanicity to Volcanoes
What is a Geyser?
Extremely hot discharges of steam from the earths surface
How do Geysers form?
Water chambers heated to an extreme temperature due to surrounding close distance magma
Give an example of a Geyser
“Old Faithful”, Yellowstone National Park
Describe a geyser eruption
Intermittent and very high (100-200m tall)
What is a fumarole?
Openings in the earths crust that emit a broad range of ages and steam.
What gases can be emitted from a fumarole?
SO2, CO2, HCL, H2S, Water Vapour
If the fumarole releases sulphur dioxide what is it called?
Solfataras
Give an example of a solfatara?
Naples Italy
What is a Hot Spring?
A very hot pool of water heated by the underlying volcanic activity.
Give an example of a Hot Spring and explain its USP
Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone It’s got different colours because Cyanobacteria thrive in the habitat and are very diverse
What is a Mud Pool?
Intensely heated pool of mud containing lots of gases
