What is a medical history?
A medical history is a structured enquiry that allows
you to find out about an individual’s health.
It includes;
• Existing medical conditions
• Allergies
• Familial traits
why is medical history important?
Alerts you to medical conditions the patient has that predisposes them to a medical emergency e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, angina.
• It may impact on your management of a patient e.g. haemophiliac patient
avoidance of dental extractions.
• Some medications may have side effects that can be seen in the oral cavity
