mini pig sterilization Flashcards
why do we spay and neuter pigs
pregnancy prevention, stinky boars, aggression, decreased cancer risk?
presurgical considerations
fasting, time heat cycles and avoid spays during heat
patient- may need to bring patient in the night before if it is flighty, give chill sedatives
how do we anesthetize for routine castration
injectable anesthesia– + intratesticular lidocaine
general steps to patient prep a castration
NSAIDs, sterile packs, have in general lateral, >1 week- prescrotal approach
procedure steps for castration
down testicle, incise over the testicle in the prescrotal region. 1 or 2 incisions, grab, strip, clamp and ligate, check stump and let go
what are the main things you need to remember to check in a castration
check inguinal ring size, if greater than one finger than you need to close the ring.
when do we decide to close vs leave the incision open?
if outside pig, 2 incisions and leave open because infection risk and we want to allow for drainage.
how to manage a inguinal hernia
exteriorize, reduce abdominal contents by twisting the testicle, suture inguinal ring closed, check the other side and GIVE antibiotics
what do you do with an cryptorchid
abdominal US, and abdominal exploratory - 2 finger sized incision.
where is the cryptorchid testicle usually located?
between the bladder and the inguinal ring
if the owner doesnt know if it has been castrated or if its cryptorchid what do you do
check for scar, AUS and tun testosterone baseline
or explore anyway
when can you spay a pig
< 4 mo, after 1st heat.
not ideal to do a pig >1 yr old
how do we induce pigs for spays
often gas them down with iso then intubate
what are key anatomical differences in a pig spay vs a dog spay
broad ligament is more vascular and requires more ligation
uterine body is very small, absent SL, more caudal incision
where do you make the incision for a pig spay
start at the most caudal set of teats and extend cranially 5-10 cm
how to do celiotomy closure for spays
peritoneum and rectus sheath
SQ
skin intradermals
what do you send home
antibiotics, NSAIDs, restrict activity
