How were the early Christian Hippies like the early Christian disciples?
They had long hair and believed in the love their elders preached but did not follow. They fought against corruption and the war of Rome with a new vision on how humans should live and relate to one another. This was influenced by the social movements of the 60s and the war in Vietnam.
What is dispensationalism?
The idea that God has different plans and relationships-different historical “dispensations” with human society in different ages.
How did the Hippies imagine themselves?
As a close, communal band of Jesus’ followers. Their read of the Bible, especially the gospels, lacked dispenstalisam. As such, they viewed themselves as receiving Jesus’ direct instructions through the text with an inheritance of the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit at their command.

The lyrics sing to God like a lover, close friend, and/or confident. The songs are filled with lyrics about unchecked feelings and longing for God. They are intimate and in some cases sexual, provocative and suggestive.

Explain the origins of the Vineyard Church
1) Pentacostolism begins in LA on Azusa Street in the early 20th century
2) In the time of the couter culture movement of the late 1960s, people were looking to make sense of the world around them and to find a new way for humans to live and relate to one another. This gave rise to the Jesus People which came out of the hippie movement. They were seeking a direct relationship with Jesus and envisioned him as a best friend. Lonnie Frisbee is then introduced to Chuck Smith at Calvary Chapel. As the Jesus People were not finding God in the Mainline churches, Smith changed his church to incorporate and embrace this new personal relationship with JC. After concerns about the showmanship of services, Smith and Frisbee did part ways. Frisbee joined with John Wimber and they established the Vineyard Church. Their popularity caused the conversion of a lot of Calvary Churches.
How do you arrive at the conclusion that God is talking to you?
A restricted suspension of theory of mind. God is talking to them like a friend talks to them
The trick is to learn how to recognize their own thoughts from God’s. Suspend the notion to act on the basis of what is in their minds
They have to suspend this notion of a solid boundary around ourself
The self is porous
You have to come to understand that the voice you hear might be your thoughts or it might be God
What are the tests to see if it is God talking?
1) Are the spontaneous yours or Gods- they use the word “popped”
2) Would God say this? (ie no harming)
3) Whether the revelation can be confirmed through circumstances or other people’s prayers- Law school thought and then seeing a Law School table set up
4) Peace with the information
Contrast Ter Kuille’s Thoughts on Prayer as opposed to the VC.
Ter Kuile prayer is about becoming more aware of who you are and connectedness to yourself and other as opposed to EP who are using prayer to direct what next in their lives.
