Q

How is coal formed?

A

When trees died they fell into a swamp. They formed layers.
Rivers carried sediments into the swamps, and the sediments formed layers on top of the dead trees.
The layers of dead trees were crushed and compressed.
Eventually the compressed dead vegetation became fossilised into a layer or seam of coal
