Mindset of Resilience Flashcards
Not TO me, but FOR me
Description:
We need adversity to grow, in fact without adversity, we become weak and brittle. Adversity serves our awakening, it catalyzes our growth by highlighting skills and qualities we need to develop, it also simultaneously provides us the opportunity to develop those skills and qualities. Adversity also deepens our service to others, by awakening our sense of empathy and compassion for the suffering others. It teaches us to do better, to BE better. It brings with it the opportunity to become the person we have always wanted to be. Adversity is therefore opportunity.
Examples:
Victor Frankel: Frankl endured unimaginable suffering in Nazi concentration camps, but instead of seeing this as pure misfortune, he used the experience to develop his psychological theory of logotherapy, which emphasizes finding meaning in suffering. He believed that even in the worst circumstances, individuals have the power to choose their attitude and find purpose in their pain. His mindset exemplifies seeing adversity as an opportunity for personal and philosophical growth.
JK Rowling: Before her success, Rowling experienced the loss of her mother, a failed marriage, and was living in poverty as a single mother. She has spoken about how these hardships fueled her determination to write and ultimately shaped the themes of resilience, hope, and triumph in her books. Instead of viewing these struggles as something that happened to her, she saw them as events that helped her become the writer and person she aspired to be.
Malala Yousafzai: After surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban for her advocacy of girls’ education, Malala continued to fight for the rights of young women globally. She views the adversity she faced as something that strengthened her resolve and gave her a global platform to make an even greater impact. Her near-death experience, rather than breaking her spirit, became a catalyst for global change.
Bethany Hamilton: After losing her arm in a shark attack, Hamilton did not see this as the end of her surfing career. Instead, she viewed the experience as an opportunity to adapt, overcome, and inspire others. Her story demonstrates how adversity can deepen one’s passion and perseverance, and she continues to be a world-class surfer and motivational speaker.
