What are monists?
Believe humans are only made of one substance; the physical body. They don’t believe in the soul and say our minds are inseparable from our bodies e.g., Aristotle
What are dualists?
Believe there are two aspects; physical body and non-physical soul. They believe thinking is different from the physical self e.g., Descartes
What does Plato believe about our senses?
They cannot be a reliable guide to the truth.
What does Plato believe about the soul?
It enables us to gain knowledge and ideas. It is unchangeable and non-physical.
Where does our soul have knowledge from?
The World of Forms.
What does Plato believe about the body?
It is a prison that takes us away from thinking, filling us with lust and fear.
What aspects did Plato believe the soul has?
Reason, spirit, appetite/desire.
When did Plato say the soul works best?
With logic and reason at the realm.
What did Aristotle believe about the soul and body?
It is impossible for the soul to live on without a body. Soul is what gives the body life and they cannot be separated.
What did Aristotle say the difference was between us and animals?
All animals have a soul but ours is different as we can rationalise.
