What is a spirit level?
A spirit level consists of two or more glasses or vials set in a metal or wooden frame
How accurate is a master precision level?
It is sensitive within 0.0005 inch per foot
Is a master level affected by heat?
Yes and should be handled carefully, should only be picked up by the top plate which does not conduct heat and should be allowed to climatize to the environment your in before use
How accurate is a precision level?
Also known as a machinist or mechanics level
It is accurate to 0.005 inch per foot
What is a special feature of a precision level?
It has a v groove in its bottom to help level shafts accurately
How accurate is a bench/carpenters level?
It is only accurate to 0.1 of a degree (0.02 inch per foot) and is not considered accurate enough to level most equipment
What is a disadvantage of a plumb bob?
Very sensitive to drafts and vibration
What can a plumb bob be used for?
It can be used for the vertical alignment of your machine
How can you overcome the disadvantages of a plumb bob? (Sensitive to drafts and vibration)
Use piano wire and a heavy weight immersed in a heavy oil
If the manufacturer aligns the equipment on a skid before arriving do you need to realign the equipment?
Yes after installation the alignment should always be rechecked
What would you mount an individual machine onto when installing?
A sole plate
Can you use a wedge as a shim?
No a wedge should never be used as a permanent solution
When installing a machine make sure your levelling screws are….
Greased so they can be backed off after the grout has set
What is the purpose of vibration isolators?
They prevent vibrations from being transmitted to other equipment and prevent wear on parts that could be affected by the amplification of the vibration
What is the most important reference line?
The centre line
