Milling Machine Flashcards
Are machine tools used to produce one or more machined surfaces accurately on a piece of material, the workpiece; this is done by one or more rotary milling cutters having single or multiple cutting edges.
Milling machines
The workpiece is held securely on the work table of the machine or in a holding device clamped to the table. It is then brought into contact with a _____ ______.
Revolving cutter
The part is moved very accurately by means of a table that can be controlled in two directions. The Third axis is provided by a vertical spindle (Z-axis) that moves up and down. What are the two axes?
X-axis(left/right) and Y-axis(in/out)
Types of milling machines.
Horizontal and Vertical
Has a horizontal spindle, and the type of machines are well-suited for peripheral milling process.
Hortizontal milling machines
Are more suited for face and end milling because of its vertical spindle.
Vertical milling machines
Is the basic machine tool for milling. It derives its name from the fact its two main components are a column that supports the spindle, and a knee that supports the worktable.
Knee-and-column milling machine
Only the table can be move relative to the spindle
Horizontal knee-and-column milling machines
Both the spindle and table can be moved.
Vertical knee-and-column machines
Broad categories of milling machines
Peripheral milling, Face milling, end milling
Other term for peripheral milling
Plain milling/Slab milling
The axis of the tool is parallel to the surface being machined, and the operation is performed by cutting edges on the outside periphery of the cutter.
Peripheral milling/Plain milling/slab Milling
Usually performed on horizontal spindle milling machines
Slab milling/Peripheral milling/Plain milling
These operations make flat surfaces on the workpiece. The surface cut is parallel to the periphery of the cutter. The cutter width extends beyond the workpiece on both sides.
Plain milling/Slab milling
The width of the cutter is less than the workpiece width, creating a slot in the work.
Slotting/Slot milling
May be used for milling narrow slots and for cutting off work.
Metal-slitting saws
Often used to machine a vertical surface on the sides or the ends of a workpiece
Side milling
Involves the use of two side milling cutters to machine the opposite sides of a workpiece parallel in one cut.
Straddle milling
A fast method of milling used a great ideal in production work. It is performed by using two or more cutters on the arbor to produce the desired shape. The cutters may be a combination of plain and side milling cutters.
Gang milling
The milling cutter teeth have a special profile that determines the shape of the slot that is cut in the work.
Form milling
The axis of the cutter is perpendicular to the surface being milled, and machining performed by cutting edges on both the end and outside periphery of the cutter.
Face milling
The diameter of the cutter is greater than the workpiece width, so the cutter overhangs the work on both sides.
Conventional Face milling
The cutter overhangs the work on only one side
Partial face milling
A very common operation performed on both vertical and horizontal spindle milling machines or machining centers.
End milling
The cutter’s diameter is less than the work width, so a slot is cut into the part.
Conventional End milling
A form of end milling in which the outside periphery of a flat part is cut.
Profile milling
Another form of end milling used to mill shallow pockets into flat parts
Pocket milling
A ball-nose cutter is fed back and forth across the work along a curvilinear path at close intervals to create a three dimensional surface form.
Surface contouring
Cutting speed formula (V)
pi x D x N
Feed formula (fm)
ft x n x Ns
The distance between the old and new machined curface
Depth of cut (DOC)
One of the most important attachments for the milling machine. Used to divide the circumference of a workpiece into equally spaced divisions when milling gears, splines, squares, and hexagons.
Indexing or dividing head
Machining time for milling machine (Tm)
L + LA/fm
Length approach formula in milling machine (LA)
sr(d(D-d)
Metal removal rate formula for milling machine (MRR)
L x W x d/Tm or W x Fm x d
Feed formula for milling machine (fm)
L/Tm
The universal dividing head set consists of what?
Index plates, headstock change gears and quadrant, universal chuck, footstock, and center rest.
When the cutter and the workpiece are going in opposite directions.
Coventional milling
When the cutter and workpiece are going in the same direction
