Milling Flashcards
1
Q
definition of milling
A
machining operation where a circular tool with multiple cutting edges rotates and cut a wide variety of surfaces, in particular prismatic pieces; the feed is held by the workpiece of by the tool.
Axis of rotation is perpendicular to the feed.
2
Q
forms of milling
A
- peripheral milling:
- surface parallel to cutter axis
- cutting edges on the periphery of the cutter - face milling:
- surface perpendicular to cutter axis
- cutting edges both on end and outside the cutter
3
Q
end milling operation
A
face milling operation where the radial depth of cut is much lower then the axial one
4
Q
slotting operation
A
peripheral milling operation to obtain a slot
5
Q
types of milling machines
A
- horizontal spindle
- base
- column
- moving table
- tool mounted on an arbor - vertical spindle
- base
- column
- moving table
- tool mounted on a head - bed-type milling machine
- long bed
- table
- multiple spindles - CNC milling machine
- moving spindle
- moving table
6
Q
possible feed motion in slab milling
A
- conventional: up milling
- chip thickness increases during the cut
- the cutter slides before the cut, causing wear and heating
- possible vibrations due to vertical load on the fixtures - climbing: down milling
- chip thickness decreases during the cut
- initial shock may cause the fracture of the tool
- vertical load on the table
- horizontal force in the same direction of the feed causes a lot of vibrations. this problem can be solved using pre loaded screw balls
