Milling Flashcards

1
Q

definition of milling

A

machining operation where a circular tool with multiple cutting edges rotates and cut a wide variety of surfaces, in particular prismatic pieces; the feed is held by the workpiece of by the tool.
Axis of rotation is perpendicular to the feed.

Q

forms of milling

A
  1. peripheral milling:
    - surface parallel to cutter axis
    - cutting edges on the periphery of the cutter
  2. face milling:
    - surface perpendicular to cutter axis
    - cutting edges both on end and outside the cutter

Q

end milling operation

A

face milling operation where the radial depth of cut is much lower then the axial one

Q

possible feed motion in slab milling

A
  1. conventional: up milling
    - chip thickness increases during the cut
    - the cutter slides before the cut, causing wear and heating
    - possible vibrations due to vertical load on the fixtures
  2. climbing: down milling
    - chip thickness decreases during the cut
    - initial shock may cause the fracture of the tool
    - vertical load on the table
    - horizontal force in the same direction of the feed causes a lot of vibrations. this problem can be solved using pre loaded screw balls
