miller paper Flashcards
why is it that we typically don’t see as big of an increase in depression in people that are diagnosed with cancer than those diagnosed with heart disease?
cardiac diseases are connected to more inflammation
what does chronic stress increase and what does that lead to?
- inflammation
- this leads to heart disease and maybe depression
What inflammatory molecules are increases by the chronic stress of caregiving for a relative with dementia?
- cytokines (one of which is interleukin 6)
- c-reactive protein
If cortisol inhibits inflammation, and stress increases cortisol, why is chronic stress associated with increased production of inflammatory molecules?
Normally cortisol activates G receptors which alter the transcription which reduces inflammatory molecules like IL-6. But what happens in caregivers is that they have a really weak transcription which gives us a paradoxical result
What is elevated in caregivers vs controls and why?
cortisol and IL-6
-some thing about the GR is not working well
GR in caregivers vs control
there was no difference in the amount of GR btw caregivers and the control but the activity of GR in the caregivers was reduced
What is the paradoxical response in the miller paper?
an increase in IL-6 and cortisol in caregivers
What is a common symptom of depression?
dysregulation of cortisol rhythms
