Methods for stimulating (pharm)
Metoclopramide, domperidone.
Exclusively breastfed supply
1-6 months: drinks 750-800ml in 24 hrs.
Can range from 500-1000 mL
Effect of low milk supply
Impact baby’s weight gain
Affect mother’s ongoing supply
Can be temporary and resolved
Baby getting enough milk over 24 hrs
6-8 wet nappies
Wake for feeds and feed vigourously
8-12 feeds

Correct positioning and attachment of baby
Increase frequency of feeds
Skin to skin contact

Rest, relaxation, good nutrition and hydration
What are galactagogues and eg.
Synthetic/plant molecules used to induce, increase, and maintain milk production.
Herbs (dill, fennel)
Milk thistle
Raspberry leaf
ADR- allergic reactions, dermatitis, diarrhoea, blood glucose changes.
Medication used for lactation suppression
Cabergoline - dopamine antagonist. taken on first postpartum day. N/V, dizziness, headache.
Non-pharm for lactation suppression
Breast support
Leakage/express small amounts of milk
Cold gel packs/compress
Simple analgesics
Breast milk storage
Fresh in container- room temp for 6-8 hrs, fridge for 72hrs, 2 wks in freezer
Previously frozen- 4 hrs at room temp, 24 hrs in fridge
