What is the OODA Loop?
A decision-making model supporting proactive decisions.
What are the four points of the OODA Loop?
Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.
What is the Observe Stage?
Gathering new information, being aware of unfolding events, and assessing areas where predictions and reality differ.
Why is the Observe Stage important?
Information gathered here affects the overall perception of the situation.
What is the Orient Stage?
Orientation is interpreting the situation that requires a decision.
Why is the Orient Stage important?
Because the interpretation of a situation significantly impacts the decision that is made.
What is a problem with Orientation?
Events are viewed through past experiences and personal bias.
According to Boyd, what are the five main factors that influence how we orient ourselves?
- Cultural Traditions
- Genetic Heritage
- Ability to Analyse
- Previous Experience
- New Information
What is the Decide Stage?
Decisions are made, based on observations and personal orientation, then subsequent actions are changed as the OODA Loop is continuously used.
What is the Act Stage?
The Act Stage is the implementation of a decision.
What follows the Act Stage?
Returning to the Observe Stage, to judge the effects of the decision implementation.
Is the OODA Loop linear?
No, it instead aims to make decision-making a fluid process.
What is the goal of the OODA Loop?
To increase the speed at which you orient and adapt within the decision-making process.
