Triumph
On his return to Rome, Octavian held a triple triumph in honour of his military Achievements in Actiums
Suetonius, Augustus: He also had three curule triumphs for his victories in Dalmatia, Egypt and Actium
Cassius Dio: Celebrated for the first day his victories … Dalmatia … second day … actium commemorated … on the third … subjugation of Egypt
Commemoration
Augustan Arch, inscription reading: ‘In honour of Imperator Caesar, son of the deified’
Similarly commemorated the victories through coinage:
Denarius of Augustus, 29-27 BCe,
obverse depicts: victory on the prow of a ship holding a wreath,
reverse depicts: Octavian standing on a quadriga, holding out a wreath, text ’Victorious Caesar’
Pax augusta- peace
Campaigns established the ‘Pax Augusta’ (Augustan Peace) - Closed the gate of the Janus Quirinus three times in his reign, highlighted in the Res Gestae, whereas in the period prior to his reign, this had only been achieved twice
Res g- claims that his birth marked the passage of a new age, backed by Virgil (Virgil, Aeneid: Lo, Caesar comes)
