Milgram's Variation #7 #10 #13 Flashcards
What was experiment #7?
- Experimenter is not present and gives instructions through phone calls
What was the reason for variation #7?
- He wanted to test the effect of physical distance between experimenter and teacher.
What were the changes made in #7?
- After giving face to face instructions , he left the room and gave orders through the phone
What were the results in #7?
-number of people willing to go to max, 450V fell from 66% to 22.5%.
Participants continued to give lower shocks rather than increase it ; they even lied about it to experimenter
The conclusions in #7 ?
-Obedience of participants change according to the presence of authoritative figure.
What was experiment #10?
- Experiment was moved from Yale uni to a run down office in Bridge Port.
What was the reason for variation #10 ?
-He noticed that the institutional context would encourage people to be more obedient than in less prestigious setting ( participants felt this way and said it gave more confidence to take part)
What were the changes made in #10?
-Took place in a a town called - Bridgeport in a commercial office building that was sparsely furnished
What were the results in #10 ?
- Slight reduction from 66% to 48% (people willing to give max voltage)
- Participants questioned credentials of company on arrival
The conclusions in #10 ?
-The less reputable context that the experiment took place in, the legitimacy of study was reduced.
What was experiment #13 ?
-Ordinary man gave orders for shock to be administered
What was the reason for variation #13 ?
-Designed to test role of authority and status on obedience
What were the changes made in #13 ?
- A draw was take to determine who would be teacher, learner and experimenter ( 2 confederates)
- 1st and 2nd confederate were the learner and experimenter and the naive participant was the teacher.
What were the results in #13 ?
- Only 20% continued to max shock level .
- Experiment was strained and learner had to go to considerable lengths to persuade teacher to proceed.
The conclusions in #13 ?
-The status of someone has a huge impact on obedience
