Milgram's Experiment Flashcards
Aim of Experiment
Deduce whether or not ordinary Americans would obey an unjust order from authority. What factors cause someone to obey?
Procedure
Milgram did a study; participants asked to give an electric shock to another participant (who was actually a confederate) if incorrectly pairing words. If the pairing was incorrect, the voltage of the electric shock increased.
Range of Shocks
ranged from 15 volts (slight shock) to 450
What’s special about 315V shocks?
learner stops responding lol
What percentage of Ps went up to at least 300V?
100% humanity is doomed lmfao
who pussied out first
12.5% stop at 300 volts, student shows stress signs
how many psychos went up to 450V….
65%
signs that Ps were NOT enjoying the experiment
nervous laughing fits, groaning, ‘digging fingernails into their flesh’ and convulsions. Someone had a seizure omggg
Finding 1
Experiment concludes it’s normal to give in to destructive obedience
Was there pressure to stay?
Participants could leave whenever, but experimenter would give prods implying they shouldn’t.
A strength of Milgram’s experiment is the operationalisation of human behaviour. How?
Produces objective results (number of volts), which can be compared + statistical analysis. Increases psychology’s credibility as a science.
How was the sample biased?
only american men- ew! Gender bias and culture bias leads to low population validity; findings not applicable to everyone.
Ethical Problems
83.7% of Ps left experiment satisfied. Experiment itself was ethically problematic. Deception in a study means the participants can’t give their full consent- they don’t know what they’re agreeing to. + Psychological damage potentially induced.
Ethical problems part 2
Though Ps had a right to withdraw, researchers made Ps feel inclined to continue.
Variation in regards to agentic shift
Variation of Milgram’s experiment; additional confederate administered
shocks on behalf of the teacher.
